# Generate a film

> Write a prompt, choose your film settings and follow Storyteller through to a finished film.

This guide shows you how to start a Storyteller film and see it through to the end.

## Before you begin

* Make sure you have enough credits. To check your credits, go to **Settings** > **Billing & Usage**.
* Leave yourself time to review the film. Storyteller pauses at any stage marked **Approval Required** and continues only after you approve it.

## Start a film

**1. Open Storyteller**

Select **Agent** in the main sidebar.

**2. Describe your film**

Write a prompt that describes the film you want. Include the subject, the story or message, the audience and the tone.

You can also choose one of the [presets](/storyteller/overview.md#presets).

**3. Choose your settings**

Set the aspect ratio, duration, language, accent, voice gender and captions. See [Film settings](#film-settings) below.

**4. Improve your prompt (optional)**

Use the prompt improvement option if you want Storyteller to refine your prompt before you submit it.

**5. Submit your prompt**

Submit the prompt to start generating your film.

**6. Review and approve each stage**

Storyteller works through each stage of the film. When a stage is marked **Approval Required**, review the work and approve it so Storyteller can continue. See [Generation stages](/storyteller/generation-stages.md).

**7. Open your finished film**

When the film is assembled, you can play and download it from **Your stories**, at the bottom of the Storyteller page. See [Your stories](/storyteller/your-films.md).

## Film settings

| Setting | What it controls |
| - | - |
| Aspect ratio | The shape of the film's frame. |
| Duration | How long the film is. |
| Language | The language of the film. |
| Accent | The accent of the narrator's voice. |
| Voice gender | The gender of the narrator's voice. |
| Captions | Whether the film has captions. |
| Prompt improvement | Whether Storyteller refines your prompt before generating. |

The options for each setting appear in Storyteller when you create a film.

## Tips for writing a prompt

* **Be specific.** Name the subject, the setting and the key points the film should cover.
* **Describe the style.** Mention the mood or visual style you want, for example cinematic, documentary or playful.
* **Say who it's for.** A film for customers needs a different tone from a film for students.
