# Video Editor overview

> Get to know the parts of the Loopdesk Video Editor.

The Video Editor is where you build a video yourself. You arrange media, text and motion elements on a timeline, get help from Aura, the editor's AI assistant, and export the finished video.

> [!NOTE]
>
> The Video Editor is separate from [Storyteller](/storyteller/overview.md). A Storyteller film doesn't open directly as an editor project, but you can download it and import it into a project to edit it. See [Edit a Storyteller film](/storyteller/your-films.md#edit-a-storyteller-film-in-the-video-editor).

## Create or open a project

### Create a project

**1. Start a new project**

Select **Projects** in the main sidebar, then select **Create Project**. The **Create New Project** dialog opens.

![The Create New Project dialog, with a Project Name field, an Aspect Ratio menu set to Landscape (16:9) — YouTube, and the Create Project button](https://mintcdn.com/loopdesk/LqE1-2ycKVvbRs86/images/Create%20project.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=LqE1-2ycKVvbRs86\&q=85\&s=6f52a4901b963fded411807fdef8ed47)

**2. Name your project**

Enter a name for your project.

**3. Choose an aspect ratio**

Choose the aspect ratio that suits where your video will be shown:

* **Landscape (16:9)** — YouTube
* **Portrait (9:16)** — TikTok, Reels
* **Square (1:1)** — Instagram
* **Vertical (4:5)** — Social

You can change the aspect ratio later in the editor, using the aspect-ratio selector on the [timeline](/video-editor/timeline.md).

**4. Create the project**

Select **Create Project**. Your new project opens in the editor.

### Open an existing project

Select **Projects** in the main sidebar, then select the project's card. The project opens in the editor.
