# Work with the timeline

> Arrange tracks, edit clips and play back your video on the timeline.

The timeline is where you arrange the parts of your video in time. Each kind of content sits on its own track.

![The timeline, with the toolbar above it and Captions, Text and Video tracks below, each holding clips](https://mintcdn.com/loopdesk/LqE1-2ycKVvbRs86/images/Timeline.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=LqE1-2ycKVvbRs86\&q=85\&s=96f560dcdf96de879cc03eb2c4de006a)

## Tracks

Tracks are stacked in this order, from top to bottom:

1. **Captions**
2. **Text**
3. **Motion**
4. **Video**
5. **Audio**

Tracks appear according to the content in your project, so not every project shows all five. The timeline expands as you add content, and you can scroll to reach tracks outside the current view.

The project in the screenshot above uses captions, text and video, so its timeline shows those three tracks.

## Add clips to the timeline

In the **Media Library**, click an item to add it at the playhead, or drag it onto the timeline to place it where you want. See [Add media](/video-editor/add-media.md).

## Edit clips

| To | Do this |
| - | - |
| Select a clip | Click it. |
| Move a clip | Drag it along its track. |
| Trim a clip | Drag the beginning or end of the clip. |
| Split a clip | Move the playhead to where you want to split the clip, then select the scissors control. The clip splits at the playhead. |
| Delete a clip | Right-click the clip and select **Delete**. |
| Undo or redo a change | Use the undo and redo controls at the left of the toolbar. |

To change how a clip looks or behaves, select it and use its properties panel. See [Clip properties](/video-editor/clip-properties.md).

## Clip menus

Right-click a clip to see the actions available for it. The actions depend on the type of clip.

| Clip type | Actions |
| - | - |
| Video | **Edit**, **Duplicate**, **Extract Audio**, **Delete** |
| Captions | **Edit**, **Duplicate**, **Delete** |
| Text | **Edit**, **Duplicate**, **Delete** |
| Audio | **Edit**, **Duplicate**, **Delete** |

**Extract Audio** is available on video clips only.

## Timeline toolbar

| Control | What it does |
| - | - |
| Undo and redo | Reverse or reapply your most recent changes. |
| Scissors | Split a clip at the playhead. |
| **1x** | The playback-speed selector. It sets how fast your video plays back. |
| Playback controls | Play your video. The buttons on either side of Play are also playback controls. |
| Time display | Shows the playhead's position and the total length of your video. |
| Playhead | The red marker that shows the current point in your video. |
| Aspect-ratio selector | Change the shape of your video's frame, for example **16:9**. |
| Zoom out and zoom in | The magnifying-glass **−** and **+** controls, with a zoom slider between them. The current zoom level is shown next to them. |
| Fit to Timeline | The icon that looks like a fullscreen button. It fits your timeline content into view. |

Playback speed, zoom and **Fit to Timeline** are separate:

* **Playback speed** changes how fast your video plays. It doesn't change the timeline view.
* **Zoom** changes how much of the timeline you see, so you can make precise edits.
* **Fit to Timeline** fits all your timeline content into view in one step.

> [!NOTE]
>
> The timeline has no fullscreen mode. The icon that looks like a fullscreen button is **Fit to Timeline**. If you want more room, you can close the timeline instead.

> [!TIP]
>
> Zoom in for precise trims and splits. Use **Fit to Timeline** to see all your content again.

## Captions

To generate captions from your video's speech, use Aura's **Transcribe** action. See [Aura AI assistant](/video-editor/aura.md).
